The Chicago Bears set the stage for their offseason when they traded for Nick Foles, putting him in direct competition with Mitch Trubisky. Since then the only people fans have heard from regarding it are outside experts, head coach Matt Nagy, and GM Ryan Pace. Only one player spoke on the subject to this point. That was Tarik Cohen. None of the wide receivers who will be on the front line for this battle have said a word. Fittingly it was Allen Robinson who got that chance.

The star receiver was the first man up in a round of player conference on Zoom with Bears media. Obviously the conversation that dominated was the ongoing unrest following the murder of Minnesota black man George Floyd at the hands of police officers. This has raised racial tensions to a height not seen in many years and it’s obvious that Robinson, a black man, is affected by it.

After speaking at length about what the team has done and will continue to do regarding the matter, he did have a chance to speak about the present situation regarding the quarterbacks. For his part, Robinson has only had contact with Trubisky thus far but remains confident he can produce regardless of who it ends up being.

Allen Robinson greatly deserves a capable quarterback

It’s not a surprise Robinson would take this sort of stance. He’s spent his entire career chained to uneven quarterbacks. First it was Blake Bortles in Jacksonville. Now Trubisky in Chicago. Would Foles be better? Maybe but he can’t count on that. All he can do is continue to prepare and do his job to the best of his ability. That is what he did in 2019 and it paid off with a great season.

Hope remains that the Bears will work out a contract extension with him before the season kicks off in September. Robinson indicates that such issues rest between his agent and Pace. He’s optimistic something will get done but doesn’t sound rattled by the idea of playing 2020 on the last year of his deal. As he said, it’s going to be a fun training camp.
