Chicago Bears Reportedly Expressing Interest in Larry Warford

-

Things appear to be moving fast for the Chicago Bears going into this weekend. News struck earlier today that the New Orleans Saints were parting ways with three-time Pro Bowl guard Larry Warford. He’d been a central part of their excellent offensive line the past few seasons. However, the arrival of 1st round pick Cesar Ruiz made his $7 million cap relief way too good to pass up. Now the 28-year old is a free agent.

It’s not a secret that the Bears have some question marks at right guard. Kyle Long has retired. The way things stand, it’s a battle between new arrival Germain Ifedi and Long’s stand-in from last season Rashaad Coward. Not exactly a competition that inspires confidence. Warford would be a substantial upgrade over either of them. Now according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, GM Ryan Pace and the team have interest in him.

“A league source said the Bears are at least considering pursuing guard Larry Warford, whom the Saints cut Friday, clearing a spot for first-round draft pick Cesar Ruiz and considerable salary-cap space at the same time.

Warford, who turns 29 next month, was selected to the Pro Bowl the last three seasons, all with the Saints, after spending the first four years of his career with the Lions.”

Larry Warford might find lots of appeal in Chicago

Obviously the Bears won’t be the only team interested in Warford. Word is the Houston Texans are also in hot pursuit as well. There are bound to be more. However, Chicago may have a couple of key advantages. Location is one. Warford is a native of Kentucky. Signing with the Bears would put him just a 90-minute flight away from his hometown. He’s also familiar with the NFC North, having spent his early career with the Detroit Lions. A chance at some revenge might appeal to him. Last but not least is connections. Former Saints teammate Ted Ginn Jr. just signed with the team. That familiarity could help as well.

Money will be a challenge for the Bears given their limited cap space but it shouldn’t be a huge hurdle for Pace. He has ways to make it work. Head coach Matt Nagy is known for being personable and somebody players really like. He might be able to help that process as well. Nothing is guaranteed but this is something to watch.

Warford is touted as a strong run blocker and smart pass protector. He’s not the most athletic guy in the world, so scheme fit could be a slight issue. Still, he’d instantly add credibility to an area of need for this team.
