Like any top player in an NFL draft class, cornerback Jaylon Johnson had to do the rounds with the media. He had to make sure to get his name out there, tell the public his story and why he believes he’ll be one of the best players in the draft. Especially considering his outstanding career at Utah was marred by multiple shoulder surgeries. One such interview took place less than a week before the draft.
It occurred on NFL Total Access on NFL Network. Analyst Steve Wyche talked to Johnson about his career and what he’ll bring to the table as a player. Does he feel he’s a 1st round pick? Is he afraid the shoulder issues will impact his draft stock? Things of that nature. All mostly benign, typical stuff. Where Chicago Bears fans will truly be interested is at the end of the interview.
Wyche asked a simple question. Which NFL receiver would he most like to cover? His answer proves beyond a doubt that he was fated to wear navy blue and orange.
Jaylon Johnson was born to be a Bear
The fact that Johnson immediately saw a Green Bay Packers wide receiver as the one person he’d like to cover most? It’s impossible not to feel a little extra giddy about his arrival. Most draft experts feel the Bears practically stole him at #50 in the 2nd round. Top analysts had him ranked as their third-best cover corner in the entire draft. Belief is he could’ve been a top 15 player if not for the shoulder concerns.

The Bears certainly aren’t going to complain. Johnson is expected to start immediately across from Kyle Fuller. This means he’ll get his wish of covering Davante Adams whenever the Bears and Packers lock horns later this year. Adams has given Chicago fits for years now. To be expected with an elite QB throwing him the ball. Johnson wants to test himself against the best. One has to love his swagger and competitiveness.
