Chicago Bears Just Gave Their Offense Another Speed Jolt

-

The Chicago Bears came into the 2020 offseason with a clear objective in mind. They wanted to get faster. Especially on offense. After remaining quiet through the first major free agency period, GM Ryan Pace struck in the 5th round of the NFL draft when he selected Darnell Mooney out of Tulane. The kid ran a 4.38 at the scouting combine and it shows on tape. Then shortly after the draft, the Bears struck again, adding return specialist Trevor Davis to the mix.

Pace wasn’t done though. Barely a day later, he added yet another name. This time in the form of longtime veteran Ted Ginn Jr. While not the burner he was in his youth, the 35-year old still has some juice in those legs. Despite playing a part-time role in New Orleans, he averaged a healthy 14 yards per catch. He’s always been good for a big play every two or three games. Combine that with Mooney and suddenly the Bears have ways to stretch the field they didn’t last season.

Chicago Bears are creating an interesting WR competition

Ginn’s arrival not only makes the Bears tougher to defend down the field. It also creates subplots to watch at the wide receiver position. The depth chart looked fairly set in stone after the draft. That has changed. Odds are Ginn didn’t sign without some sort of assurance he’d make the roster. He’ll like make it anyway. That leaves the big question. Who is he replacing?

Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, and Cordarrelle Patterson are all locks. The same can be said for Mooney. Along with Ginn that makes five guys. Unless the Bears decide to carry seven receivers into this season, that means only one spot remains open. Most likely it will come down to a three-way battle between Davis, Javon Wims, and Riley Ridley. Davis offers the most special teams value. Wims is the most experienced receiver while Ridley has the most upside as their 4th round pick from 2019.

It should be a fun battle come training camp time.
