Powerhouse Guard Drawing Serious Interest from Chicago Bears

-

The Chicago Bears offensive line doesn’t figure to change too much in 2020. This is mostly due to two factors. Two guys being good and set in place and the other two largely being protected by their contracts. The latter being tackles Charles Leno Jr. and Bobby Massie. In truth, the only vacant spot on the front five is right guard, recently vacated by the retiring Kyle Long.

Thus far GM Ryan Pace really hasn’t done much to convince people he’s found an answer there. With free agency more than a week in, the only offensive line move he’s made is signing former 1st round pick Germain Ifedi. He might compete for that job but it’s more likely he’s veteran depth given the contract he signed. This leads one to think the Bears might have their eyes on finding a solution in draft.

One must not forget Pace found both Cody Whitehair and James Daniels in the 2nd round. He’ll have two 2nd round picks going into next month. It’s growing more possible by the day that he might use one to fix this problem. According to Justin Melo of The Draft Wire, the Bears have kept tabs on one particular name.

Lewis is exactly what the Chicago Bears need

Most of the talk about this draft class has centered on the tackles, but there are some interesting names at the guard position too. Lewis stands near the top. He was a huge part of the offensive success LSU enjoyed during their run to a national championship. While not the most athletic at his position, he does have value exactly where the Bears need it.

“The run-blocking tape shows a forklift dressed as a right guard with the power and leverage to move some of the best interior defenders in the conference. The pass-blocking tape shows a heavy-footed guard who lacks length and lateral quickness to hold up if asked to block on an island…He’s a one-position prospect who lacks height/length but he’s a plus run blocker who should outperform his draft slotting.”

Offensively, this is just what the doctor ordered. Chicago was one of the worst rushing teams in the NFL last season. They routinely weren’t able to impose their will on anybody. Long had always been the one who set the tone for them but injuries derailed his career. With a guy like Lewis, they’d get that mentality back.
