Yoan Moncada Reportedly In Talks To Sign Largest Contract In White Sox History

-

Yoan Moncada established himself as one of the best third basemen in baseball in 2019 and now the 24-year-old might be on the verge of signing the largest contract in White Sox history.

The White Sox have already locked up a handful of their young core players, inking Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert and most recently Aaron Bummer to long-term contract extensions. According to James Fox, the White Sox are trying to add Moncada to the list, reportedly working on a 6+ year extension.

Fox, senior editor at Future Sox and managing editor for Southside Hit Men, was the first to report about the White Sox and Robert working on a contract extension in late December. A few days after the new year, Robert agreed to a deal that could earn him up to $88 million.

Before the 2019 season, Jimenez agreed to a contract extension that could be worth as much as $78 million.

During this past offseason, Yasmani Grandal signed the largest free agent deal in White Sox history, at $73 million over four seasons.

In 2019, Moncada slashed .315/.367/.548, with 25 home runs in 132 games for the White Sox. His 5.7 fWAR was tied for 15th best in all of MLB, while ranking 9th best in the American League.

As of now, Moncada has four more seasons (including 2020) before he can reach free agency.

UPDATE

Yoan Moncada was asked about the rumored extension talks Tuesday morning and unless he’s really trying to keep things quiet, there aren’t any discussions going on with the White Sox right now.
