White Sox Pitching Prospect Will Have Tommy John Surgery

-

He’s not as well-known as some of the other White Sox pitching prospects, but 24-year-old reliever Hunter Schryver was making big strides in the minors last season. Unfortunately for the lefty, he’ll miss the 2020 campaign, as Schryver will undergo Tommy John surgery later this week.

Schryver was picked in the seventh round of the 2017 draft by the Rays and was immediately converted into a reliever after being a starting pitcher in college at Villanova. The White Sox acquired him from the Rays at the trade deadline in 2018, and was quite impressive in his brief time at Winston-Salem, recording a 1.20 ERA, with 21 strikeouts and three walks in 15 innings to finish the season.

In 2019, Schryver began the year at Double-A Birmingham and continued to get outs, posting a 2.77 ERA in 48.2 innings. He was eventually promoted to Triple-A, but the outrageous hitting environment (juiced ball) bloated Schryver’s ERA to 8.56 in 13.2 innings.

Overall in his minor league career, Schryver has appeared in 101 games (1 start) recording a 3.08 ERA with 180 strikeouts in 160.2 innings.
