Virginia McCaskey has never been the most hands-on owner in the NFL. That isn’t a knock on her. While she is an avid football fan dating back many decades, she always knew her limitations. She was not her iconic father George Halas. The best thing for her to do was try to put her beloved Chicago Bears in the hands of the right people and contribute to growing the game she loved so much. Even now, at age 98, the franchise matriarch continues to execute her duties so well.
That was proven on one of the best commercials of Super Bowl Sunday. The NFL unveiled their “NEXT 100” commercial that featured a young man receiving a kickoff. With the ball in his hands, Jim Brown implores from a bench nearby to “take it the house.” So he runs and keeps running ala Forrest Gump across the entire U.S. Along the way he comes across multiple current and former NFL legends. Finally, he arrives in Miami for Super Bowl LIV.
At the end of a long hallway going onto the field, three people await him. One is Pittsburgh Steelers legend Joe Greene, one is all-time QB Peyton Manning and the other is McCaskey herself. It is an epic three minutes of work capped off by a sweet moment.
