I don’t think Nolan Arenado has smiled this big since the 2018 Wild Card Game, when he hugged Javier Báez. The Rockies’ third baseman reported to spring training on Sunday and just like Kris Bryant the day before, Arenado was asked about the trade rumors swirling around this offseason.

The big difference is that Bryant and the Cubs, while there are trade talks, don’t have any hard feelings and by all indications, including Bryant himself, he very much wants to stay long term with the Cubs. On the other hand, Arenado and the Rockies’ front office don’t appear to have the best relationship and several reports have said he wants out of Colorado. Although, Arenado said he’s never asked the Rockies to be traded.

The Cubs are reportedly engaged in trade talks with the Rockies for Arenado, but those discussions have not gotten to a serious stage. It’ll be even harder to make a trade now that players are at spring training, but Arenado was specifically asked about the Cubs talk and he couldn’t hide his smile thinking about the possibility of playing on the North Side.

Here’s the video from ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

It’s rare that you see any trades during spring training, especially when you’re considering star players like Arenado and Bryant, but there’s no doubt that the trade rumors will pick up again in 3-4 months.

Right now, it’s safe to say that Arenado will be with the Rockies on Opening Day, but he really, really wants it to be the Cubs instead.
