Nothing ever beats the NFL offseason because the rumor mill can churn out some truly epic stuff. NBC Sports delivered a notable one recently involving the Chicago Bears and Dak Prescott. What does it mean? To get there, we must start with how the entire cloud of smoke got started. It came courtesy of Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin.
It’s not secret that Irvin is prone to running his mouth on all things Cowboys. No surprise when the guy has three rings playing for them. While hardly a true insider, if there’s any team he might have some inside information on? It would be Dallas. That was why it became notable when he appeared on the Dale & Keefe Show where he unloaded a considerable nugget from his time spent down at Super Bowl LIV.
The subject? The Cowboys trading Dak Prescott/
“I am telling you right now, at the Super Bowl in Miami, some very significant people that I had conversations [with were] leaning in that same direction. It was shocking. I had a vodka cranberry in my hand and when they said it to me. I put the drink down and said, ‘Let’s talk a little bit more about this.’ I promise you, I had a conversation with people, I can’t tell you who, about that same scenario going down.”
Dak Prescott feels like a highly unlikely option
The scenario is simple enough. Dallas signs Tom Brady as a free agent and then quickly trade Prescott to another team for draft picks. Irvin made it clear his sources weren’t Jerry Jones or any key front office people but insisted the information was good. This is what led to the speculation about the idea of the Bears being in play for that trade.

Obviously it would be expensive. Not only would they have to give up multiple high draft picks, but over $30 million per year in a new contract as well. It’s not impossible, but the cost is prohibitive for Chicago so soon after the Khalil Mack trade.
That said, rumors have persisted for some time that Ryan Pace was a big fan of Prescott back in 2016. He wanted to draft him but was overruled by then-head coach John Fox in favor of keeping Jay Cutler. If Pace feels Prescott is available and truly the last piece to the puzzle, he’s aggressive enough to go get him.
Will it happen? Doubtful. All signs point to Dallas working out a contract extension with their quarterback at some point. The odds of Brady going there which would facilitate the move feel remote as well.
