After signing the best catching prospect in the international market last year the Cubs are now expected to sign Cristian Hernandez. The 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic is a right-handed hitting shortstop and Hernandez might end up being the number one prospect of this upcoming IFA class.

Here’s a video posted by Ben Badler from Baseball America that’ll give you a quick look at Hernandez when he was only 15-years-old!

“big power, a fast bat and advanced swing mechanics from the right side.” With plus speed and a projected ability to stick at shortstop for the long term, Hernandez is considered by some to be the top overall prospect in this class.”

According to Baseball America, the Cubs are also expected to sign catcher Moises Ballesteros out of Venezuela. The Cubs just keep raking in the talent at the catcher position.

Obviously we know about Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini at the MLB level, Miguel Amaya is one of the organization’s top prospects and just last year the Cubs signed two top international free agent catching prospects in Ronnier Quintero and Brayan Altuve. Quintero was considered the top catching prospect from last year’s class.

Now, add 15-year-old Ballesteros to the mix.

These deals will be announced in early July, when the international free agent signing period officially opens up.
