Chicago Bears Make Their First New Addition at Tight End

-

Everybody with half a brain knew the Chicago Bears were going to be active at the tight end position this offseason. They didn’t get nearly enough of what they needed from it in 2019. In fact, one could easily argue it was the weakest point on the roster. So GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy figured to have designs on a possible overhaul. By the look of things, they aren’t wasting time in those efforts.

Just 48 hours after the Cleveland Browns terminated his contract after one season, the Bears came to an agreement with veteran Demetrius Harris. Before joining the Browns last year, he’d spent five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. There he served as a backup to Travis Kelce and a strong presence in the blocking schemes. It’s hardly a surprise the Bears were interested given how close of a connection he shares to Nagy.

The Bears need a boost to their overall blocking up front and Harris can be a big help in that regard.

Chicago Bears have a versatile player in the mix

It’s not a coincidence that good running games seem to follow where Harris goes. He was a big contributor to helping Kareem Hunt become a star in Kansas City and then did the same for Nick Chubb in Cleveland last year. He’ll be a big help towards reviving Chicago’s ground attack while also keeping the quarterback upright as well. Don’t be fooled into thinking he’s a one-trick pony though.

Harris isn’t going to Pro Bowls as a pass catcher, but he has value in that department. Especially in the red zone. Over the past two seasons, he’s caught a total of 27 passes. However, six of them went for touchdowns. His size and underrated hands have made for a nice target in that area of the field. This is a solid, affordable option for the Bears as they try to reshape the depth chart.
