Chicago Bears Insider Foresees Worst-Case Scenario at QB

-

The Chicago Bears aren’t revealing anything in regards to their plans this offseason. GM Ryan Pace has always been one to keep things close to the vest and that hasn’t changed. This will prove especially true at quarterback. The less people know about his intentions, the better the odds of him springing on the guy he may want, be it in the draft or free agency. Of course, none of that matters if what he said after the end of last season is true.

While people speculate about who the Bears will bring in, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune poured a huge bucket of ice water on all the speculation. During the Bear Download podcast with Dan Wiederer, he didn’t mince words. He is of a strong belief that the team wasn’t lying when they said the plan is for Mitch Trubisky to be the starter in 2020.

Rather than hedge their bets for this season, they are apparently going to double down on the 25-year old.

“I think there are some folks out there who believe that they are going to reboot the position. To go out and get a new quarterback. A guy that would sort of reset the depth chart there. I don’t believe that’s going to happen. I think they are committed to holding onto hope that Mitch Trubisky can become and evolve and rise to the level of that franchise quarterback.”

Chicago Bears actions thus far do back up this belief

Hard as something like that might be to stomach for several Bears fans, the actions the team has taken thus far seem to reinforce this notion. Particularly in regards to how they’ve restructured the coaching staff. They added a ton of new faces on the offensive side including offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. Both men have strong reputations for coaching up the QB position.

It’s difficult not to see that as a last-ditch maneuver by head coach Matt Nagy to get as many good voices around Trubisky as he can.

The idea of staying the course would be that the Bears devote every penny they can muster towards improving the offense around him this offseason. That means moves at tight end, wide receiver, and the offensive line. Not to mention some tweaks to ensure the defense remains strong. It seems like they believe the Trubisky of 2018 is the real one and that their job is to limit the number of breakdowns the offense in general suffered last season.

That is a colossal gamble if Biggs is correct, and one that could end up costing a lot of jobs if wrong.
