Hmmmm, could the Cubs be on the verge of adding a player to their 40-man roster via free agency? Not much has happened this offseason for the Cubs, as they’ve only signed minor league deals, choosing to get under the $208 million luxury tax threshold instead of adding a few pieces to immediately upgrade the roster for 2020.

After making trades with the Dodgers and Red Sox the Cubs’ 40-man roster reached its limit, but now there is a spot open as left-handed pitcher CD Pelham has been outrighted to Triple-A after clearing waivers.

The Cubs originally picked up Pelham off waivers from the Rangers in late November. The 6-foot-6, left-hander can throw 100mph, but he hasn’t exactly put his raw stuff together, struggling throughout his minor league career. But still, you’d like to get him in the lab and see f you can figure it out with him if you’re the Cubs.

So, the Cubs manage to keep Pelham in their organization and clear a spot on their 40-man roster. I’d have to guess that if the Cubs do add one more player, then it’s going to be a hitter.
