Kris Bryant has taken centerstage in trade rumors surrounding the Cubs at the Winter Meetings in San Diego, but Willson Contreras isn’t far behind. Going back to the start of November, Contreras has been the Cubs player most speculated about in a trade.

Rumors will continue to swirl and two West Coast teams seem like obvious trade partners in a deal for Contreras. First, how about a reunion with his only MLB manager, in Joe Maddon and the Angels?

Anaheim is all-in this offseason pursuing not only the top free agent in Gerrit Cole, but they’re looking at the third base market too.

During the first day of the Winter Meetings Maddon made it known that the Angels are also interested in acquiring a catcher.

Earlier on Tuesday ESPN’s Jeff Passan went on ESPN 1000 in Chicago and said the Padres have been connected to Cubs on Contreras.

And hey, at least the asking price is really high as it should be for both Contreras and Bryant.

The Padres are indeed looking to upgrade behind the plate.

Contreras, 27, has three years of arbitration left before he can become a free agent following the 2022 season. An All-Star level catcher, the Cubs should be asking for an absurd price.

We’ll find out if the Padres concede, as they’ve already made a few trades that have included a couple highly regarded prospects in Luis Urias and Xavier Edwards this offseason.
