Spice Adams Isn’t Buying Into Mitch Trubisky’s Revival

-

Spice Adams has become one of the favorite celebrities in Chicago Bears lore these days. An internet sensation known for his bevy of different characters, quick wit, and just all-around great sense of humor. One thing he’s not typically known for voicing is an opinion on the general state of his former team. That is why it was somewhat shocking when he went onto ESPN’s Jalen & Jacoby show to talk football.

There were several different topics from the New England Patriots videotaping of the Cincinnati Bengals sideline to his learning early on when it wasn’t the best idea to cheer for certain teams (like the Detroit Lions). Soon enough the subject of the Bears was broached, specifically regarding quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Most have seen the 25-year old play some of the best football of his career the past three weeks, guiding Chicago to three-straight wins.

Given everything he’s seen up to this point, is Adams convinced Trubisky is a franchise guy or at least deserving of another year? Not exactly.

“Listen, I always want the competition. I think it’d make the team better. You know what I’m saying? So let’s get him. Cam! Where you at baby? Come out to Chicago baby. Whatever you want to do. Let’s sign some competition.”

Spice Adams won’t give Trubisky 2020 without insurance

Adams explained before that quote about how the Bears always brought in new defensive tackles during his time with the team. It was a loud and clear message. Make sure you keep playing well or one of these guys will replace you. He believes it made him a better player. So there’s no reason to think the team shouldn’t do the same with Trubisky. Especially given how vital the quarterback position is to the fate of a franchise.

It’s not a bad idea given how the first half of this season went. However, his selection of Cam Newton as the “competition” is a bit unrealistic. If the Bears were to trade for the former MVP, they would be giving up a lot of money and draft capital. There is no way they’d do that with the idea of having him compete with Trubisky. Newton would be the starter. Period.

That doesn’t mean Adams’ idea is ill-founded. There will be a few other options next offseason who might better fit the bit. Names like Philip Rivers, Case Keenum, and maybe even Alex Smith depending on what happens in Washington if he does return from his broken leg. Much of how this plan plays out would depend on how Trubisky finishes the season.
