When the thought of the Cubs trading Kris Bryant first came up the only way you could justify such a move was if and only if the Cubs then signed Anthony Rendon or Josh Donaldson. Obviously prefer Rendon, but Donaldson would also be a good replacement for the next few years and plus you’d imagine the Cubs would get a haul for Bryant.
On the first day of the Winter Meetings the reality of the Cubs actually trying to trade Bryant this offseason really sunk in. We’ve seen wild trade proposals, Twitter rumors left and right and then Bruce Levine dropped the first bit of actual trade talks involving Bryant.
Then, more speculation followed. Hey, you know who else needs a third baseman? The Braves.
Right now the Rangers and Dodgers seem to be the top-two teams in on Rendon, while the Donaldson market continues to develop. Again, the Cubs don’t appear to be in on any major free agent let alone any at the top tier.

But there’s always hope that if a Bryant trade is done, then they’ll sign one of those free agent third baseman. Well, that isn’t the plan according to Ken Rosenthal. It’s actually quite the opposite.
You’d think that maybe just maybe, signing one of those third basemen could give the Cubs not only a valid replacement for Bryant, but maximize the trade market at the same time too!
But no. Instead the Cubs appear more than willing to trade Bryant and replace him with…David Bote? But remember, the Cubs are going to try and compete in 2020 too. Nothing says competing like trading away your best player from the previous five seasons combined.
