It was believed that former Blue Jays and Red Sox manager John Farrell would be considered to join the Cubs coaching staff in 2020, but according to a report from The Athletic on Tuesday that’s no longer the case.

Farrell, who has been working for the Reds since 2018 as a special assistant, was first linked as an expected candidate by 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine.

Mark Loretta hasn’t been ruled out as returning to the bench role position next season, but the Cubs are said to want someone with previous managerial experience to be in the dugout next to David Ross.

While Farrell is out as a candidate according to Patrick Mooney, the Cubs are interested in former Padres manager Andy Green.

Sources say former San Diego Padres manager Andy Green is one of several names on the team’s radar, while John Farrell — a former Red Sox pitching coach and manager and current Cincinnati Reds special assistant — is not being considered for a role on Ross’ staff.

Green spent three seasons managing in the minors, winning Southern League Manager of the Year in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, he was the Diamondbacks third base coach and after the season was over the Padres hired Green as their manager. His time in San Diego was underwhelming, as the Padres were going through a rebuild, but he received a contract extension through 2021 in 2017. However, Green was fired this past September, during his fourth season as Padres manager.

The Cubs will also need a new third base coach, as Brian Butterfield followed Joe Maddon to the Angels.
