Matt Nagy Can No Longer Hide His Terrible Offense Behind Trubisky

-

Most of the season, the primary blame for the Chicago Bears and their bad offense has fallen on the shoulders of Mitch Trubisky. That’s easy to understand. The quarterback has looked incredibly inconsistent this season and downright passive at times. All of the playmaking skills he showed in 2018 have evaporated and it seems to have neutered a lot of what the offense can do. However, as time has gone on it’s hard to deny that head coach Matt Nagy can no longer hide from blame.

It’s becoming clear that the entire offense is bad. Not just the quarterback. Wide receivers are dropping almost every pass in sight. The offensive line can’t move anybody off the ball in the run game and their pass protection hasn’t been all that great either. The lack of good execution falls at the feet of the head coach. This offense is supposed to be Nagy’s baby. He is the one who instills the necessary discipline for players to perform properly.

They haven’t been doing that. To say nothing of the unimpressive game management and scheming. Nagy has his bursts of inspired play calling from time to time, but too often he’s been unable to put a complete game together. On Sunday night in Los Angeles, the Bears offense was shut out for the third time in six games. Trubisky looked fairly sharp throughout most of that time. Everyone else? Nope.

Matt Nagy keeps saying he’s about solutions

Nagy continues to say that he and his staff are all about finding solutions for the Bears offense. The fact of the matter is he’s found none. Every week it’s been the same story. Terrible starts followed by maybe a quick burst of a score or two before disappearing into the night once again. The head coach is a good leader who understands locker room psychology. Unfortunately, his offensive prowess may have been a little bit oversold.

Will a different quarterback change things? It’s possible. A lot of offenses have looked terrible until they found a competent guy under center. That said, Nagy has some serious soul-searching to do the rest of this year and into the offseason. It’s unlikely the Bears will fire him but his job will definitely be on the line in 2020. If he can’t accomplish what he was hired to do and put some points on the board, then what’s the point?

The Bears have one of the worst offenses in the NFL and that is unlikely to change. Nagy had some credibility after the end of last season. That is long gone now.
