Draft Experts See This College QB Slipping to the Chicago Bears

-

The Chicago Bears will be quarterback hunting in 2020. It’s a virtual guarantee at this point. Mitch Trubisky won’t be cut or traded. The fourth year of his rookie contract is fully guaranteed anyway. There wouldn’t be much point. No, the idea will be to bring in some sort of competition either to push him to finally improve or reveal once and for all that he truly is a bust. General discussions about this course of action tend to focus on the veteran market.

Either free agency or even the trade wire could be options for them. Names like Teddy Bridgewater, Philip Rivers, Case Keenum, Marcus Mariota, Andy Dalton, and Cam Newton. Not a terrible list of options, but some of them will prove expensive and it’s not like the Bears will be the only team seeking the services of those guys. So it’s important to offer this counter-question. What happens if the Bears can’t get the veteran they want?

This would inevitably leave the draft. Connor Rogers and Matt Miller, draft experts and hosts of the “Stick To Football” podcast discussed this exact scenario. Is there a QB in this class that would be worth taking in the 2nd round (the Bears have no 1st rounder) that could compete for the job immediately? They think so, and they also think he could slide just far enough for Chicago to get him.

Jake Fromm fits the Chicago Bears offense as it is

After watching the Bears offense for long enough, it’s clear what head coach Matt Nagy wants. He seeks a quarterback who can scan the field from the pocket and find the open receiver. This is the way a classic West Coast offense quarterback is supposed to function. Unfortunately, Trubisky hasn’t been able to master that part of the game. He’s still far too inconsistent, missing the open man on reads and clearly racked by indecision. His head is swimming and that is trickling down to everyone else.

Fromm is arguably the most pro-ready quarterback in the 2020 draft class. He’s been the starter at Georgia for three years, playing against the best conference in the country. He can read the defense before and after the snap, showing good eyes for scanning the field. He’s also lauded for his football intelligence. The guy is known for an indomitable will and terrific leadership. While not the most physically gifted in this class, he hasn’t let something like that stop him.

In many ways, he’s the complete opposite of Trubisky. Lacking in potential but experienced, battle-tested, and a master of how to play the game at its most advanced levels.
