Chicago Bears Add a New Flavor to Tight End Position

-

Once again the tight end spot was nowhere to be found for the Chicago Bears on Sunday night in Los Angeles. While quarterback and offensive line have gotten plenty of heat for the offensive struggles this season, the complete disappearance of that position isn’t being factored in as well. Tight end has typically been a big part of this type of system that head coach Matt Nagy runs. So far he’s gotten nothing from a mixture of Trey Burton, Adam Shaheen, and Ben Braunecker.

With the Bears 4-6 and looking unlikely for the playoffs, it appears the team is reaching that point where they’re starting to evaluate younger players on the roster. With Burton on IR and Shaheen basically shut down, this is a prime opportunity for others to get a chance. Sure enough, it was announced by the team that they had elevated undrafted rookie Jesper Horsted from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of the showdown with the New York Giants on Sunday.

Chicago Bears hoping Horsted can help the passing game

Horsted was a considerable surprise during the preseason back in August. Undrafted out of Princeton, most didn’t take him seriously as a contender to make the roster. That is until he started making some highlight-reel grabs. The kid demonstrated remarkable hand-eye coordination while catching eight passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. It was a small sample size but there was evidence that he has a certain knack for catching the football. Something the Bears desperately need from that position.

Is it a guaranteed fix? Of course not. Still, it will be nice to see him get an opportunity. Maybe the Bears really do have something there.
