You May Never See This Play Again In A Cubs Game, Or Any Other Game Ever

-

Somewhat lost in the Cubs third straight blowout win against the Pirates is that Tony Kemp had the go-ahead hit, a two-run triple in the bottom of the third inning. Not only had the Pirates gone ahead 5-3, but Wrigley Field was as quiet as ever after Anthony Rizzo injured his right ankle and was in obvious pain before he was helped off the field.

Following Kris Bryant’s second home run of the game and a Victor Caratini sac-fly that tied the Pirates at five, Kemp drove in Ben Zobrist and Jason Heyward with a triple in the right field corner.

And then we all got to laugh at the Pirates.

Every sport has its quirky rules and one of them for baseball is the appeal process when a team thinks a runner didn’t touch a base. The Pirates thought either Zobrist or Heyward missed third, so they appealed, by simply throwing over to third base, touching the bag and seeing if the umpire rules safe or out.

Well, at least that’s what the Pirates tried to do.

Scoring a run on a throwing error on an appeal? OK! The Cubs didn’t need much help from the Pirates scoring runs this weekend, but they’ll take it.

Can’t get enough laughing at Clint Hurdle’s big red face.
