Nick Castellanos Is Closing In On MLB History

-

During Monday night’s 8-2 Cubs win, Nick Castellanos added some much needed insurance late in the game, hitting a two-run double in the eighth inning.

Castellanos is the current MLB leader with 55 doubles and he’s already reached rare heights, joining only two other right-handed hitters in MLB history with at least 25 homers and 55 doubles in a season.

The other two are in the Hall of Fame.

The 55 doubles also made Castellanos only the 24th player in the league’s history to hit that many in a single season.

The all-time, single season record is going to be tough to reach, as Earl Webb hit 67 two-baggers in 1931, but Castellanos has a great chance to be the first player since 1936 to reach 60 doubles in a season.

The top-six, single season doubles leaders all happened in 1936 or before, so that’s why I’m using that as the cutoff year.

Since then, only nine players have hit more doubles than Castellanos, but he still has 12 more games to pass them.

Castellanos has always been a doubles machine and he’s kept that reputation since being traded to the Cubs. But as we know, he’s been doing almost everything at the plate since coming over from the Tigers.

A great individual season for Castellanos and it’s not being wasted with the Cubs.
