Mitch Trubisky Was Awful in Denver…But Delivered When it Mattered

-

Let’s face facts. It was another week that was hard to watch on the Chicago Bears offense. Mitch Trubisky wasn’t quite as bad this time as he was against the Green Bay Packers. However, it was close. He only threw the ball 27 times for 120 yards. He again missed a few throws that should’ve been big plays and it looked like this was going to cost the Bears another close game. With just 30 seconds left, Denver took a 14-13 lead on a late touchdown and two-point conversion.

Nobody in the building thought Trubisky would be able to pull it off. Thankfully with a bit of luck and composure in the final seconds, he did just that. The drive started with Broncos outside linebacker Bradley Chubb being flagged for a roughing the passer penalty. It was an iffy call. The third such called by that referee crew on the afternoon. Even so, it didn’t seem like it mattered. Trubisky was incomplete on his next three throws.

Then facing 4th and 10, the offense was flagged for 12 men in the huddle. That meant the Bears QB had to convert a 4th and 15 with nine seconds left and somehow leave enough time for a field goal attempt. Trubisky took the snap and to his credit didn’t rush the throw. He waited, observed then stepped up in the pocket and found Allen Robinson for a gigantic 25-yard conversion. Then Trubisky had the wherewithal to immediately call timeout as Robinson was hitting the turf.

Chicago was awarded one second left on the clock. That was all Eddy Pineiro needed, kicking the following 53-yard field goal right down the middle for a climactic 16-14 victory.

Mitch Trubisky still needs a lot of work

Needless to say, critics will remain hard on Trubisky moving forward. That’s no surprise. He still doesn’t have a touchdown pass through the first two games of the season and looks closer to the player he was two years ago as a rookie. With that said, he hasn’t lost his flair for making something happen late. He did it back in January against the Philadelphia Eagles and should’ve won that game. Unfortunately, Cody Parkey ruined the party.

Pineiro wasn’t about to let that happen again. Not only did he deliver the field goal this time, but he also did it from 10 yards further out and on the road for good measure. Nobody can say for sure if Trubisky will ever turn into a top-flight quarterback. There is one thing we can say about him at this point. If an opponent gives him an opportunity late, he always seems to find a way to get his team in position. It may not always be pretty, but wins are what matters in the end.
