Chicago Bears Draft Outlook Got a Bit Better on Sunday

-

The Chicago Bears draft situation for 2020 is far on the horizon. That said, it’s importance remains the same. It will mark the second-straight year the team won’t have a 1st round pick to work with. Nor will they have 3rd or 4th rounders. This means any sort of benefit they can squeeze out of what they do have is potentially significant. Lucky for them a few developments around the league seem to have helped them out.

The big one took place up in Minnesota. There the Oakland Raiders continued their crashing back to Earth after a strong start to their season. They beat the Denver Broncos in that game and seemed like they’d improved. Then they proceeded to get crushed by their rival Kansas City Chiefs 28-10 in their second game. No big deal, right? The Chiefs are good. Well, that optimism didn’t last long. On their next trip up to Minnesota, they were thoroughly dismissed by the Vikings 34-14.

Just like that, they look like the team that ended last season. Weak on defense, lacking firepower, and watching their quarterback take too many hits. It doesn’t figure to get much easier looking ahead. Their next five games will be against the Colts (2-1), Bears (1-1), Packers (3-0), Texans (1-1), and Lions (2-0-1). Bad news for them but great news for Chicago who currently holds Oakland’s 2nd round pick in 2020.

If they finish with a poor record, that selection could end up near the top of that round, giving Chicago a huge chance to acquire some top talent from that class.

Chicago Bears draft benefits kept coming

It wasn’t just the 2nd round pick either. Chicago also holds a 5th rounder from Oakland too. Given Ryan Pace’s reputation with those picks, this is a positive development too. The Raiders though weren’t alone in giving the Bears’ offseason resources a minor boost. An unexpected loss by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Lions dropped them to 1-2 on the year. A baffling start for a team that looked like one of the best in the conference when the year began.

Chicago currently holds a conditional pick from them courtesy of the Jordan Howard trade. Depending on the parameters of the pick, it will either be a 5th rounder or a 6th rounder. It’s likely those conditions won’t be known until the end of the year. Either way, the Eagles’ current misfortunes is a potential gain for the Bears. There is a long season to go and things may change. Still, the way things look for the time being? Chicago may end up with some nice positioning on some of their draft picks next April.
