REPORT: Cubs Interested In Korean Pitcher

-

The Cubs are interested in Korean pitcher Kwang-Hyun Kim, as they were one of several teams to go out and scout the left-hander on Wednesday. However, his start was rained out.

The 31-year-old made his pro debut in 2007 in the KBO League. Kim has a 2.44 ERA in 23 starts this season for the SK Wyverns.

The lefty came close to coming over to MLB to begin the 2015 season, as he was posted by his team in the winter of 2014. The Padres were the highest bidders at $2 million, but they couldn’t agree on a contract with Kim, who returned to the KBO.

The biggest concern surrounding Kim when MLB teams were first interested in him back in 2014, was the high amount of walks. From 2011-14, he was averaging 4 BB/9, while striking out only 7 per nine innings. Those struggles may have been as a result of some injuries, as Kim only made 52 starts from 2011-13.

However, Kim has improved those numbers, cutting his walks in half for the past two seasons.

Here’s a look at his pitching arsenal.

Kim has a 3.29 ERA in 12 seasons in the KBO.
