Javon Wims Showcased Again Why He’ll Be a Stud This Year

-

People who thought the 2018 preseason was nothing but a mirage about Javon Wims are going to be eating some crow. After a decent showing in the opener against Carolina, the second-year receiver went off in the first half against the New York Giants. He made five catches for 64 yards including a huge conversion with 10 seconds left in the half to give the Chicago Bears an easy 27-yard field goal.

Wims has been far and away the best receiver of the preseason. This after being the second-best wide receiver at training camp. The first being Allen Robinson. It was a surprise when the Bears didn’t give him more opportunities as a rookie. By the look of things, they’re going to have a hard time keeping him off the field in 2019. His route running has improved and he’s still able to use his size and body strength to outmuscle defensive backs for the ball.

He looks like a professional receiver and somebody Mitch Trubisky can take full advantage of on 3rd down and in the red zone.

Javon Wims already showed signs late last season

Even though he didn’t play in the first 15 games of 2018, his appearance in the season finale against Minnesota proved his ability. Despite playing a top defenses in their own building, he made a couple of huge catches on the drive that pretty much put the game away from the Bears. It sounds like the Bears coaches know they can trust him a lot more now given the work he’s put in over the summer.

It’s merely a matter of figuring out how they’ll fit him into the game plan given the other quality receivers they already have in Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, and Anthony Miller. Given how much Matt Nagy loves to spread the field, having four reliable wide receivers can be a boon for this offense.
