Charles Harris is a Trade Option the Bears Must Pounce On

-

GM Ryan Pace is never shy about making deals. He’s made several trades just in the past couple of years. He moved up in the 2018 draft for Anthony Miller, delivered the blockbuster for Khalil Mack, moved up in the 2019 draft for David Montgomery, and sent a conditional 7th to the Raiders for Eddy Pineiro. All of those moves paint the same picture. He wants to get a player he feels has considerable upside and can be had at a fair price. That’s why Charles Harris should interest him.

Pace has every reason to consider the possibility of making another minor move to help bolster his roster for what many feel is a Super Bowl campaign. There are a number of areas that could use help. Tight end is one, offensive tackle is another, and defensive back is never lacking a need for depth.

One position though that continues to garner concern is outside linebacker.

Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd are set at the top. Aaron Lynch looks like the #3 option. The major concern lay with that fourth spot. For most of the preseason the battle for it has been decidedly underwhelming. Veteran reserve Isaiah Irving and former CFL free agent James Vaughters have stood out the most. Right now it appears one of them will win the job. That is unless Pace can find somebody he likes better.

Harris could be an underrated name to get, and there is a belief that he like many others on the Miami Dolphins roster might be available. Gregg Rosenthal alluded to this for NFL.com.

“I believe Jacoby Brissett is primed to succeed in Indianapolis, but the Colts are now in the market for a veteran backup quarterback. (Their only roster option for Week 1, with Chad Kelly’s two-game suspension, is … Phillip Walker.) The Patriots’ Brian Hoyer and 49ers’ C.J. Beathard are two options that should be available. The Texans look more likely than ever to trade Jadeveon Clowney after losing another key starter, and it’s hard to imagine Trent Williams ever playing for the Redskins. The Dolphins might be willing to trade anyone not named Laremy Tunsil and Xavien Howard.”

Charles Harris is a guy who needs a fresh start

The general feeling is the Dolphins are in rebuilding mode. That means they’re likely searching for ways to acquire future draft capital. Harris, their former 1st round pick, has been a disappointment through the first two seasons with just two sacks. Part of the problem was always a belief that he wasn’t the greatest fit for a 4-3 defensive end. He’s 6’3 with arms under 33 inches long. Both are undersized for that position. Many felt he was a better fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

Even so, the 24-year old has shown considerable progress this preseason. In just three games he has 11 total pressures including two sacks. His ability to dip under blocks and shed them has consistently stood out. Put under the tutelage of Chuck Pagano and Ted Monachino, he may finally end up in a situation that can take advantage of his biggest strengths. Throw in the fact that Miami is apparently in hot pursuit of Jadeveon Clowney, they may welcome the chance to add a little draft capital.

A 5th round pick may be all that’s needed to get it done.
