Eddie Jackson Credits 2018 Breakout to Unheralded Bears Legend

-

Eddie Jackson was a good player in 2017 during his rookie season. In 2018, he transformed into a great player. Most believe that was just the natural progression of an outstanding talent who was learning to play at the NFL speed. As it turns out, that’s not entirely the case. Jackson spoke to NFL Network analyst Jim Trotter recently about that breakout season and how it came about.

Apparently, Jackson had a good work ethic and effort level going into last year, but not one that would elevate him to the mantle of top 5 safety in football. One coach who took notice of that was none other than Clyde Emrich. For those who don’t know, he is the legendary former strength and conditioning coach the team had employed for five decades since they discovered him in 1963.

His efforts helped lead to some of the most successful eras in Bears history including their ’63 championship, 1980s dominance and resurgence from 2005 to 2010. The guy has seen many a Hall of Fame player walk through those doors at Halas Hall. So when he has words to say, people listen. What he told Jackson had a profound impact.

Eddie Jackson took the words to heart and results followed

Keep in mind Emrich worked with the likes of Brian Urlacher, Dick Butkus, Doug Atkins, Dan Hampton, and Richard Dent. He knows what Hall of Fame players are supposed to look like. So for him, with his countless years of experience to say that to Jackson speaks volumes. The results that followed spoke for themselves. In just 14 games he delivered six interceptions and scored three defensive touchdowns including two that were decisive game-winning moments.

He was also only one of two players to successfully pick off Aaron Rodgers.

There were strong undercurrents that he deserved consideration for Defensive Player of the Year. While that wasn’t going to happen, it paints a clear picture of how impacting his year was for his team. Suddenly the expectations for him have grown from being just a really good safety to possibly becoming one of the best of his generation. He might even have the rare distinction of the first Bears safety ever elected to Canton.
