David Montgomery Is Fast Becoming a 2019 Breakout Favorite

-

David Montgomery is a 3rd round pick. He wasn’t even the first player taken in the NFL draft at his position nor even close to the highest-graded offensive player in the 2019 class. Yet that hasn’t stopped from a massive swell of optimism to surround him since the Chicago Bears drafted him back in April. People don’t just expect a decent rookie year. They expect big things.

Montgomery wasn’t accompanied by any of the trademark flash and hype several other picks were. He didn’t come from a powerhouse program like Alabama or Ohio State. He isn’t overly big and didn’t deliver monumental times or measurements at the scouting combine or his pro day. First glances don’t show a player that can be destined for a long and productive NFL career.

That hasn’t stopped from a number of notable experts stating without reservation that he will have an instant impact as a rookie. Just look at what Jay Glazer said regarding who he believes the fantasy breakout player of 2019 will be.

“I would go with David Montgomery, a third-round pick and a rookie running back for the Bears. He has to battle it out with Mike Davis to be that feature runner. I really liked him coming out of Iowa State.”

David Montgomery is already turning heads in practice

Montgomery went over 1,000 yards rushing for Iowa State over the past two years. He was undeniably the engine that drove their offense and helped them to back-to-back 8-5 seasons. That is one of the best runs the football program has had in a long time. He comes across as a reserved and humble young man but also a fierce competitor who works tirelessly to improve.

According to multiple accounts, those traits are already showing up in practice. Montgomery is not only showing that vision he was known for as a runner, he’s also naturally catching passes and shaking defenders with quickness. Things the Bears didn’t really have last year with Jordan Howard. Considering how dangerous the running game was when they didn’t have the ideal pieces, there’s no telling what it might do with Montgomery in the fold.

Hence why optimism about his odds of delivering a big year are so high.
