Bears and Packers Both Keying on This Offensive Line Standout

-

The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers rivalry isn’t just on the field anymore. It’s become a war being waged in the offseason as well. Ten years ago these two teams weren’t looking for the same types of players. Things have changed though. Suddenly the two arch enemies are often found sniffing around the same exact draft prospects or free agents.

It seems nothing has changed this year.

GM Ryan Pace is a man of consistency when it comes to every offseason. He always works tirelessly to add more young bodies to the offensive line. The Bears have drafted one every year he’s been in charge since 2015. There is a chance that streak may come to an end this year though.

The Bears only have five picks in the 2019 draft. It’s hard to guarantee they’ll set aside one of them for the offensive line. If they can’t, then it’s clear Pace wants to be ready to grab possible options on the undrafted market. One name seems to have caught his attention. He’s not alone though according to Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com.

“Trewyn had the benefit of participating in the NFLPA Game, but he deserves mention. He’s a tough, wide-bodied blocker at the pivot who plays with terrific fundamentals. Depending on who you speak with, there are as few as seven draftable centers available this year, and a few of them are guards who project to center. The result is that Trewyn could land in the seventh round. He’s presently drawing a lot of interest from the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.”

Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers are right to like Nate Trewyn

It’s not surprising that the Packers are keeping track of Trewyn. He’s right in their backyard after all. They’ve already employed a few players from Wisconsin-Whitewater over the year. This includes current fan favorite in wide receiver Jake Kumerow. The Bears though were fortunate to get close to him earlier than most at the NFL Players Association Bowl.

A game that former head coach and new Chicago defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano volunteered to coach at earlier this year. Trewyn was the only Division III player to receiver an invitation, having won the Remington Award for the best offensive lineman to play at that level in 2018.

Trewyn is known for being a technician with his blocking, rarely making fundamental mistakes while showing the grit and attitude to finish plays. The question teams will have is about his size. He’s only 6’3, which is a bit short for an NFL offensive lineman. There are also concerns about his overall strength. Hence why his only position may be center.

If so, the Bears likely will be looking at him as a possible backup for either Cody Whitehair or James Daniels depending on who gets that job this year. Still, he has potential worth exploring. Stealing him from under the Packers’ noses would be a nice bonus.
