Former Bear Delivers Wild INT to Seal AAF Postseason Berth

-

The Chicago Bears are far from a perfect franchise but they’ve been pretty good about keeping good players and not letting them get away during the Ryan Pace era. One name they may be second-guessing at the moment is De’Vante Bausby. Most fans might remember the name. He’s a former undrafted free agent who started with the Kansas City Chiefs before signing with the Bears in 2015.

He spent two years with the team, during which he appeared in four games and made 12 tackles. Unfortunately, he never quite latched on and was eventually allowed to walk in 2017. He appeared briefly for the Philadelphia Eagles last season but didn’t do much there as well. At last, he took a new opportunity to sign with the San Antonio Commanders of the Alliance of American Football.

This seems to have been a good career decision. Bausby has become one of the best cornerbacks in the league with five interceptions on the season. The fifth coming in one of the most clutch sequences the league has yet witnessed.

It was quite the setup. Salt Lake City trailed 17-15 with under two minutes to go. They’d just scored a touchdown and were going for two to tie the game. Bausby jumped the route and returned it for a pick-two, making the score 19-15. Not only was it an outstanding play on his part, but one that put the game away.

The Stallions suddenly went from needing a field goal to win the game to needing a touchdown. They’d have to convert an onside offensive play of 4th and 12 from their 28-yard line and drive the length of the field with a minute and a half left. The odds were heavily against that happening. It didn’t. San Antonio won the game and punched their ticket to the playoffs.

It was all thanks to Bausby, who may have cemented his second chance at the NFL after this season is over.
