The Cubs really wanted David Ross to have a more defined role with the team in 2019, and after Brandon Hyde was hired by the Orioles to be their manager speculation turned to Ross being a candidate to be the Cubs bench coach. Yet, it just doesn’t seem like Ross wants the stress that comes with the grind that is a baseball season.

On Tuesday, ESPN announced that it had reached an agreement with Ross on a multi-year extension. Ross first joined ESPN in 2017, after retiring in 2016, when he won a World Series with the Cubs.

Ross will regularly call ESPN’s weeknight MLB game telecasts and appear on Baseball Tonight, including at the World Series, MLB All-Star and the Little League World Series. He will also contribute analysis to SportsCenter and Get Up!

Ross will also remain with the Cubs, as a special assistant to the front office.

Who knows what his intentions will be in the future coaching wise, but it’s pretty clear that Ross is comfortable being on TV right now away from the field.
