Mitch Trubisky Heard the Haters, Then Destroyed the Lions

-

It’s amazing the amount of criticism Mitch Trubisky has had to put up with the past month. Here’s a kid in the midst of the best statistical season a Chicago Bears quarterback has ever had. He’s half a season into a brand new offense and has his team 5-3 at the halfway point. Yet many in the national media are declaring he’ll probably be gone in three years at the most.

It was puzzling more than anything. Meanwhile, former players like Steve Young and Phil Simms assured everybody that he would be fine. He’s headed in the right direction. Just give him time to bring it all together. Therein lay the problem. Many in the media and certain fans don’t have that kind of patience.

Trubisky remained quiet on the subject. He didn’t dignify those people with words, although Tarik Cohen certainly fired back a couple of times. No, the 24-year old quarterback saves his response for the field. He did it over a month ago to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This time around it was the poor Detroit Lions who felt his wrath.

Mitch Trubisky was magnificent in a game his team had to have

The offense came to play in this one. Trubisky was super from the start, completing his first 12 passes. His rhythm was good, his eyes and decision-making were sharp and his passes were on target. Getting Allen Robinson back was a huge benefit. It’s clear the two have developed a strong connection. They hooked up twice in the game for touchdowns with Anthony Miller continuing his own ascent with another.

Trubisky finished with a career-high 355 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and didn’t turn the ball over. That’s about as perfect as a quarterback can play. His 148.6 passer rating marks the third time in 2018 he’s gone over 120. His predecessor Jay Cutler did it eight times total in eight seasons. This kid is the real deal.

His performance late in the game was particularly special. With the Lions having cut the lead to 34-22 with seven minutes left, the Bears absolutely needed a sustained drive to drain some time off the clock. Trubisky, as he’s done a number of times this year, answered the call. He got one first down with a huge 8-yard scramble on 3rd and 4. Then on 3rd and 5, he hit Miller for 15 yards and another.

The drive drained six minutes off the clock and basically put it away. That game in it’s entirety belonged to Trubisky. Well-deserved.
