It Took Six Words For Mitch Trubisky To Destroy a Hater’s Existence

-

Mitch Trubisky didn’t do anybody wrong but it sure seems like he did. Critics have hammered him over the past few weeks to an extent that it feels like he might’ve insulted their mothers at some point. It started with Bill Barnwell of ESPN stating he would likely be gone from the team by 2020. Then Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com ranked him the 26-best quarterback in the league.

However, nobody delivered a harsher take on him than Michael Lombardi. For those who don’t know him, here’s a quick back story. He’s a former NFL executive who’s spent time around the league, most notably with the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns. He was GM for the latter in 2013 but was fired after one season.

His last job was as a senior consultant for the Patriots in 2016 but he lost that job as well and has been unemployed since. That didn’t stop him from delivering a scathing take on Trubisky on the Follow The Money podcast.

“No, I’m not buying Mitchell Trubisky. You couldn’t get me to buy Mitchell Trubisky if you had him on a discount rack at Filene’s Basement. There’s no chance. There’s no chance. He can’t throw the ball inbounds half the time. I mean, it’s a joke. I was in Chicago this week and all I saw was Trubisky jerseys and I’m thinking you people are crazy. You’re going to be selling them in three years. There’s no way.”

It’s interesting that he’d say that considering he was part of the front offices that drafted guys like JaMarcus Russell and Johnny Manziel. Trubisky though didn’t need too many words to set him straight.

Mitch Trubisky walked the walk then talked the talk

His answer came in two parts. The first occurred in the game against the Detroit Lions. Facing the most critical stretch of the season, Trubisky was at his best. He threw for 355 yards, a career high, and three touchdowns while also adding 18 yards rushing including a four-yard quarterback draw for a touchdown. It was the best performance of his career.

After the game, Trubisky gave credit to his teammates and coaches for having his back throughout the learning process and whenever outsiders called him a failure or a bust. When the subject of Lombardi came up though, his reply was brief but absolutely savage.

“I’m not sure who that is.”

What else is there to say. Lombardi left himself wide open for a comment like that. He was trying to deliver a hot take on a quarterback he’d probably never watched in earnest to prove a point. Then that quarterback delivered a near-perfect performance and dropped the mic after the game by refusing to acknowledge his existence.

I think we’re done here.
