Matt Nagy Couldn’t Hide Teeny Bit of Smugness over Trubisky Stats

-

Matt Nagy is always cordial during press conferences, but people forget that he’s a prideful and competitive human being. He wants to win at everything he does. It’s why he has success in the NFL as a coach. Right now his primary job is two-fold: make the Chicago Bears a winning team and turn quarterback Mitch Trubisky into a viable starting quarterback.

That second one has a more personal feel to it. Remember that Nagy is a former quarterback himself. He was a quarterbacks coach in Kansas City. He’s supposed to know the position inside and out. The primary reason the Bears hired him was to help Trubisky become what they felt he could be. Nagy himself became a fan of the young QB before the draft last year. This project matters to him a lot.

That’s why it was probably difficult for the first three weeks of the season. Trubisky was clearly struggling to acclimate to the new offensive system. He seemed flustered and couldn’t settle into any sort of rhythm. That changed in week four when he exploded for six touchdown passes against Tampa Bay. A week later he followed it up with three more in Miami.

Suddenly people can’t ignore Trubisky anymore, and Nagy is loving every minute of it.

Matt Nagy couldn’t contain a smile at Trubisky comparison to Tom Brady

During his daily press conference with the Chicago media on Thursday, Nagy was informed that Trubisky, in fact, has a higher quarterback rating this season than the man the Bears are set to face on Sunday. That being eventual New England Patriots icon Tom Brady. Nagy tried his best to remain composed but he simply couldn’t contain a smile at that revelation.

To his credit, Nagy was happy that Mitch has played so well but he kept a proper perspective on the matter. Individual achievements are fun, but Brady would be the first to say it doesn’t mean much if you don’t win. The numbers don’t matter. It’s all about the letters (Ws and Ls). Still, the fact he couldn’t contain his almost smug delight at the recognition his quarterback is receiving just shows how much he wants it for Trubisky.
