Bears Tagged as Prime Landing Spot if Tom Brady Leaves Patriots

-

A lot of Chicago Bears fans, fair or not, are ready to cut the cord on Mitch Trubisky after just one season. So this little service is for them. What if, by some stroke of luck, the New England Patriots cut ties with Tom Brady. Would you guys scream at the Bears to sign him and put the Trubisky plan on the shelf? It’s a fascinating what-if question that was recently raised by notable sports radio personality Colin Cowherd.

Cowherd came across a book titled, “Belichick: The Making of the Greatest Football Coach of All-Time.” In it the author states that the Patriots trading of Jimmy Garoppolo basically trapped Brady in New England. Despite the general feeling he’d like to go somewhere without Belichick, the 40-year old QB can’t. Not without ruining his god-like status with Boston fans.

Cowherd speculated on the possibility though. He wondered where Brady might head to if he had his choice of teams. Two stuck out the most.

“The two places that I do think would be an interesting landing spot for Brady, where they have really smart offensive guys and have a quarterback that’s replaceable, Miami with Ryan Tannehill. [Head coach] Adam Gase is a smart cookie. Brady could go down there, cut the cord with Ryan Tannehill,” Cowherd said. “The second place is Matt Nagy, the Andy Reid guy in Chicago. Tom would look at that and go: ‘Oh hell, that defense. I’d go up against Aaron Rodgers.’ With that defensive front and that roster, and Chicago would cut ties or demote Mitch Trubisky.”

Tom Brady would make the Bears contenders (on paper)

Now, of course, most people would leap at this opportunity. The Bears adding arguably the greatest quarterback in NFL history to an offense stacked with young talent and matched with what has swiftly become one of the best defenses in the league? It seems like the perfect recipe for an instant Super Bowl contender.

Imagine Brady throwing to Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, and Anthony Miller or handing it off to Jordan Howard. It’s tantalizing to be sure. It also might be a fever dream. Keep in mind Brady has played in a highly advantageous system for several years that he knows inside and out. There’s no telling what might happen if he’s taken out of it at this stage of his career and plopped somewhere else.

There’s also the threat of retirement constantly lingering around the corner. The Bears could expect what? Maybe three years at most from Brady before he’s likely done. If they fail to win the Super Bowl in that brief window, they’re sunk and forced to start over again from scratch. On the other hand, if they can get Trubisky elevated their window would be open for at least the next decade.

It’s a fun thing to consider, but also would be a major gamble. Not that it would ever happen anyway.
