Ryan Dempster Forgets The Internet Exists, Completely Makes Up Story About Greg Maddux

-

I get it, Ryan Dempster is in the booth getting ready to sing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame,” and he’s trying to be funny. Completely understand that Dempster is still trying out his stand-up routine, but there’s one big problem. You can just make shit up nowadays to set up your joke because it’s really easy to go back and see if you’re lying.

And I’ll give Dempster credit for the delivery, the entire set up to the joke and the punch line, but he prefaces the anecdote making the audience believe it’s factual when it’s definitely not.

OK, so here’s the story.

Dempster says that back in 2004, he blew a save at Wrigley Field that would have sealed up Greg Maddux’s 300th win. After the game the Cubs headed out to the west coast and Dempster claims Maddux told him that he was mad not about the win but because his family had to fly out too and that wouldn’t allow him to go out and play golf.

Here’s Dempster completely made up story about blowing Maddux’s 300th win at Wrigley Field in 2004.

Let’s go back to the summer of 2004.

On July 27, Maddux picked up career win No. 299, against the Milwaukee Brewers and his very next start was at Wrigley Field against the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 1. Dempster did pitch in that game against the Phillies, it was actually his very first game with the Cubs, but it didn’t come in a save opportunity to wrap up Maddux’s 300th victory.

Maddux exited the game trailing 3-2 after six innings and then Dempster came in. He got two outs and allowed one hit before getting replaced by Kent Mercker, who got the final out in the seventh inning. The Cubs then scored four runs in the bottom half and eventually won 6-3. Fun fact, that was also Nomar Garciaparra’s first game with the Cubs after the trade with the Red Sox.

Maddux at no point was in line for the win and at no point did Dempster blow a save. In his next start against the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 7, 2004, Maddux did get the win for number 300.

So yeah, pretty funny by Dempster, but completely made up.
