Coaching Target John DeFilippo Just Scored Big In Bears Interview

-

John DeFilippo, quarterbacks coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, is vying for the Chicago Bears head coaching job. Many around the league see him as the next Sean McVay. A young offensive specialist who understands how to get the most from a young quarterback. For the Bears that’s a huge deal now that Mitch Trubisky is in town.

With that said the job won’t be handed to him. Other top offensive minds have their eyes on it as well including Pat Shurmur, Josh McDaniels and Matt Nagy among others. In order to get a leg up on them DeFilippo will had to make a big impression of some kind during his interview. Something that will instantly get GM Ryan Pace on his side.

Of course the Trubisky angle and his prior work with Carson Wentz is a huge arguing point. Perhaps the biggest. That said the Bears have been down the offensive route before with Marc Trestman. It failed. Why? Trestman didn’t understand how to support the defense and it fell apart. What can DeFilippo offer in terms of not repeating the same mistake?

Apparently the simplest solution in the world.

John DeFilippo is prepared to retain Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator

I reported a few days ago that the Bears were taking steps necessary to find a way to retain defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. This isn’t a big surprise. In the past three years he turned the worst defense in franchise history back into a top 10 unit. His ability as a coach is well-respected and his players love him. The trick is finding somebody who is willing to keep him and somebody he’d be willing to work with.

The Bears may have just found their guy.

This shouldn’t be a surprise. DeFilippo has no reason to dislike or distrust Fangio. He saw the value of what bringing in an experienced and proven defensive mind can do with Jim Schwartz in Philadelphia. By keeping Fangio in place, all he’d have to do is work his own magic on Trubisky and the offense to get things pointed in the right direction.

Adding further advantage to this situation is the fact Fangio and DeFilippo know each other. They worked together for a year way back in 1996 when the latter was a coaching intern for the Carolina Panthers. Fangio was defensive coordinator at the time. This was a seed planted long ago.

If the Bears could bring it together, 2018 just got a lot more interesting.
