Jose Quintana Takes The Hill Tonight In A First-Place Sox Battle

After 19 games in 19 days, the Chicago White Sox finally got a day off on Monday to rest. The first month of the season was extremely busy for the South Siders. They only had one scheduled day off and played 16 of their first 26 games on the road and yet they still sit atop the American League Central and also own the AL’s best record at 18-8. They’ll now have a nice stretch in which they play 16 of their next 22 games at U.S. Cellular Field and also have a few more days off sprinkled into the month of May. They’ll begin that stretch tonight as they host the team with the second-best record in the American League, the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox come into tonight’s matchup fresh off of a sweep of the rival New York Yankees and find themselves alone at the top of what should be a very competitive American League East division. They’ll send Steven Wright to the mound tonight, who despite a 2-2 record has the second-lowest ERA in the American League at 1.37. He’s given up only four earned runs in 26 1/3 innings this season and only one in his last two outings. He was the victim of the slow start by the Red Sox and really just didn’t have any run support in his first two starts, which is something tonight’s White Sox starter knows all too well.

Jose Quintana takes the hill tonight for the Chicago White Sox in search of his fourth win of the season. It’s been nice to see the Chicago left-hander getting some much-deserved wins this year. His only no-decision thus far came in his season debut and he’s won three of four games since then and even in the game he lost he only gave up two earned runs over six innings. But apparently that wasn’t good enough. Since that loss to Tampa Bay, Quintana hasn’t allowed an earned run, throwing 13 straight innings of shutout baseball to go along with 14 strikeouts, 10 of which came in his last start. The crowd at The Cell should be in for one hell of a pitching duel tonight.

Here’s everything else you need to know about tonight’s season opener.
