Here we go again.
The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates renew one of baseball’s most exciting rivalries today as they open a three-game weekend set at Wrigley Field. While many of the games in recent memory have been closely contested (okay, maybe not this season), it’s been the Cubs that have come out on top more often than not. Chicago took 11 of the 19 games in 2015 and also took the biggest game of the year between the two clubs with a 4-0 victory in the National League Wild Card game. The Pirates and Cubs have already met once this season, with the North Siders absolutely dominating the Bucs in a three-game sweep at PNC Park, outscoring them 20-5 in the process. The first-place Cubs hope to continue that dominance today and put even more distance between themselves and the second-place Pirates. Chicago currently holds a seven-game lead over both Pittsburgh and St. Louis in the National League Central.
In search of his fifth win of the season, undefeated Jason Hammel will pitch for the Cubs today while the Pirates will send Francisco Liriano to the mound. Hammel technically had his worst outing of the season in his most recent start, giving up three runs in five innings to the Nationals in a no-decision last Saturday. Liriano is coming off of an outing against the Cardinals in which he gave up only two earned runs in seven innings to pick up his third victory of the year.
