The Best Chicago Bears Of All Time By Jersey Number: #40-49

1786

#46-Doug Plank

Tenure: 1975-1982

Gary Fencik’s partner on “The Hit Men” was the #46 honoree, safety Doug Plank, who was known as one of the hardest hitting safeties in the NFL during his playing days. He’s one of only two Chicago Bears to lead the team in tackles in his rookie season, the other being Brian Urlacher. The “46 defense” that was created by Buddy Ryan and defined that Bears defense during their run in the 80s was actually given its name in honor of Doug Plank’s number 46.
