Phil Emery said in an online chat Tuesday that if the Chicago Bears use the franchise tag on Jay Cutler for one season, rather than using it as a means to negotiate a long term deal, it will hurt the Chicago Bears chances of signing other players on their roster.  Jay Cutler would get around $16.5 million with the franchise tag.

“With the franchise tag being so high for the quarterback position, to use it and not sign the individual to a long-term deal hurts the team,” Phil Emery wrote on, “because you lose the ability to prorate the amount of guaranteed salary over the length of the contract.”

This sounds like Phil Emery wants to get Cutler locked up with a long term deal using the franchise tag as leverage.  Some Chicago Bears fans are looking for the team to head in another direction at the QB position with the recent success of Josh McCown.  Other fans would argue that Cutler isn’t worth the franchise tag money, and they don’t want him long term.

If Phil Emery signs Jay Cutler to another 3-5 years at roughly $12-$15 million, is that the best thing for the Chicago Bears?  Is Jay ever going to be the dominant leader on the field everyone THINKS he can be?  Only time will tell.

Honestly. .. I dont know anymore. I think I would rather use that money somewhere else on the team. Draft a QB and groom him. I like cutler alot but I don’t know if he is a franchise QB.
