Ted Ginn…..What Exactly Is It The Bears Are Paying You For?

Quite honestly it’s becoming a serious chore to figure out what exactly the Chicago Bears saw in Ted Ginn Jr. The 35-year old wide receiver insists head coach Matt Nagy was in his ear all offseason. Chicago wanted him bad. If that’s the case, then somebody needs to walk into their pro scouting room and slap some head around.

Ginn is basically stealing money at this point. He has three catches on the season. Anybody who watches him run routes will see a guy who couldn’t look more disinterested. He’s not running full speed or giving any sort of indication he’s trying. If people weren’t quite sure where his priorities are at this stage of his career?

Just watch him field punts.

His game against the Los Angeles Rams was truly a sight to behold. Ginn wanted no part of returning any punt all night long and his decisions to not even try often left the Bears stuck deep in their own territory. It was so ugly that it almost became comical by the end of the game. Chicago started five of their offensive drives from at or inside the 10-yard line.

If people wanted to know how huge of a loss Tarik Cohen was, they’re getting an eyeful every time the Bears trot that man onto the field when the defense gets a stop.

Ted Ginn has no use on this roster and needs to go

A roster spot at wide receiver is usually reserved for one of two types of player. One who is extensively used and productive on offense. Or one who is a constant presence on special teams. Through seven games, Ginn has proven he is neither. He’s basically stealing a roster spot that could better be utilized elsewhere. The Bears need to put that little experiment to bed. It’s not like they invested much in him to begin with.

So what can the Bears do? Well, they may already have an action plan in mind. They worked out Dwayne Harris last week. The former Pro Bowler was an outstanding special teams player in both Dallas and Oakland. He stood out in the return game as recently as 2018. At 33-years old he isn’t quite the player he was seven years ago but he can’t possibly be worse than what Ted Ginn has been.

Maybe even try Darnell Mooney in that role.

The rookie 5th round pick has already shown he can be electric on offense. Several times he was seen burning the Rams defense deep with his speed. He certainly tries way harder than Ginn. Why not give him a chance to field a punt or two? Just because he’s never done it before doesn’t mean he can’t.

One thing is for sure. This farce can’t continue. If it does? The Bears deserve everything coming to them. Ginn Jr. was an interesting flier in free agency. One they need to accept isn’t working out. Time to move on and give his spot to somebody else who can be useful.
