Von Miller Knows Good From Bad QBs and Sees Greatness in Trubisky

-

Von Miller is going to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day. Easily one of the best defensive players of his generation and arguably the best pass rusher after J.J. Watt. Part of what has made him so great is his ability to understand how quarterbacks think before and during the snap. So he might see players at that position a bit differently than the usual media or fans. He’s been against the full spectrum of types in his career.

That is why it was interesting to hear his opinion on Mitch Trubisky. Back in 2018, Miller stated with confidence that he felt the Bears quarterback had a bright future in the NFL. Then he watched the 25-year old struggle in 2019. Opinions for many have changed on Trubisky in that time. Was Miller the same? He was asked if his original opinion still felt true on the Pardon My Take podcast. His answer caught some by surprise.

“Yeah. I mean he’s had good spurts, right? I don’t think…even he would tell you that he’s not a finished product yet. But he has a lot of potential and has done a lot of great stuff for the Chicago Bears. So he has just got to keep going. “

Miller seems confident in his statement too.

“I know quarterbacks. Like I see them. I sack them and I can see them. I know the good ones from the bad ones. Mitch is definitely not bad.”

Von Miller agrees the Bears should stick with Trubisky

So it stands to reason that Miller applauds the decision by GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy to continue forward with Trubisky in 2020. Use the resources you have to fix the rest of the offense and see if one more year in the offensive system finally gets him clicking. There were definite signs of life late in the year with huge wins over Detroit and Dallas. Maybe with better protection, actual tight ends, and a running game he might actually do okay.

It’s not like the Bears need him to be a superstar. Just what he was two years ago would’ve sufficed. They have a good enough defense to make a run. Miller should know this. His defense carried a just-good-enough offense to a championship in 2015.
