REPORT: Cubs Interested In Free Agent Second Baseman

-

The Cubs could use more depth in the infield and as much as I’d like that addition to be Brock Holt, 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine is reporting that the Cubs are interested in a different free agent second baseman.

This follows the same theme of the offseason, as the Cubs have signed players to split or minor league contracts. The one exception being free agent outfielder Steven Souza Jr., who will agree to an MLB deal with the Cubs. That’s still being worked out. Anyway, the newest target for the Cubs is 29-year-old Scooter Gennett, who at this point probably just wants a shot to make a team in spring training.

The left-handed hitter is coming off a brutal season in which he only played 42 games because of a groin injury. Upon his return from the injured list, Gennett slashed .226/.245/.323, with two home runs, while striking out 41 times in 133 at-bats, splitting time with the Reds and Giants in 2019.

But hey, maybe it was the groin injury that really slowed him down because his numbers were pretty damn solid from 2017-18. In those two seasons Gennett had an OPS above .850 and hit 50 home runs combined in those two years for the Reds.

Gennett doesn’t walk much (5.4% in his career) and he strikes out about 20% of the time. Yet, if it’s a minor league deal, then sure why not roll the dice on another good, bounce back candidate. At the very least you get a platoon hitter at second who can fill in sometimes against right-handed pitching. And hey, he has to be better than Daniel Descalso, right?

But let’s make it clear right now, you’d only want Gennett as a backup/depth guy. I still want Nico Hoerner getting the first shot at being the starting second baseman in 2020.
