Recent Buzz Hints Chicago Bears Won’t Go QB Early in the Draft

-

Will they or won’t they? That is the question so many Chicago Bears fans are asking in regards to the upcoming NFL draft. Will they draft a quarterback and if so when? Some truly believe GM Ryan Pace might just pull a fast one and grab a prospect he likes with one of his 2nd round picks. Valued insurance against Mitch Trubisky who faces a make-or-break situation heading into the 2020 season.

It’s not a totally unheard of strategy. Teams have done it many times in the past. The unknown in all of this is whether Pace feels it would do any good. Then again, the choice may not be up to him. He’s said plenty of times that he takes the best player on the board, regardless of position. Based on what draft insider Matt Miller is hearing, the quarterbacks are likely to get plucked clean long before the Bears even enter the picture.

“In talking to scouts this week, there is a strong feeling that demand will drive up the value of the supply. Take Fromm, for example. There are scouts who believe the Georgia quarterback’s football IQ and experience will impress teams enough that they’ll overlook a largely average career statistically at Georgia.

You could poke holes in every quarterback prospect in this class—Burrow’s inexperience, Tua’s injuries, decision-making from Herbert, Love and Eason—but the simple fact that so many teams need a 2020 starter or quarterback of the future is likely to drive value up.

When asked for a prediction, one personnel executive said five quarterbacks will be drafted in the top 15 picks.”

Chicago Bears do have a silver lining in this

Quarterbacks are always in high demand, so even those that should be taken later end up going early in a draft. That’s just the nature of the position. The Bears would need a considerable stroke of luck for a player of note at that position to become available in the middle of the 2nd round. However, just because this is the case doesn’t mean everything is bad. The Bears can actually benefit in a different way.

With so many quarterbacks going that early, it guarantees several quality players at other positions will fall lower on the board than they should go. That means a tight end, cornerback, edge rusher, or offensive lineman who can contribute to the team right away might end up falling into their lap. This is undoubtedly something that is on Pace’s mind as this process continues to unfold.
