Chicago Bears Met With Explosive WRs at East-West Shrine Game

-

The Chicago Bears won’t exactly be subtle about their focus going into the 2020 offseason. One can bet almost all of their resources will be devoted to the offensive side of the ball. That is what happens when a unit finishes 29th in the NFL. The question is where will their focus be placed? Tight end? Offensive line? Quarterback? All are certain to get some form of addressing. However, people might be overlooking wide receiver.

The position was seen as a strength going into 2019 but looks were deceiving. Allen Robinson was a stud and deserved to make the Pro Bowl. Beyond him though, plenty of questions have developed. Anthony Miller, their prized former 2nd round pick, really began to pick up steam late in the season. Then he injured his shoulder on a kickoff in the season finale against Minnesota, resulting in a second surgery on that body part.

Taylor Gabriel had moments of flash but failed to play again after the Bears’ win over New York due to a prolonged concussion issue. Javon Wims played more snaps by a wide margin this year but still managed just 18 catches for 186 yards and a touchdown. Cordarrelle Patterson? He’s never been a major target on offense and remains their All-Pro kick returner. Riley Ridley is an unknown after his rookie season as well.

So yeah. Not a lot of certainty there. This would explain why the Bears were proactive out of the gate down at the East-West Shrine Game, interviewing multiple wide receivers.

Chicago Bears eyeing big-play wide receivers

According to Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com, the Bears were seen to have met with two different wide receivers thus far down at East-West Shrine practices. Both of them exhibiting certain characteristics the team would be searching for. The first was Joe Reed. While only third on his team in receiving yards this past year, the 6’1 kid out of Virginia led his team with seven touchdowns catches.

What probably intrigues the Bears the most though is his versatility. Reed was one of the best kick returners in college football during his career. He delivered five touchdowns dating back to 2017 and was a constant threat with the ball in his hands.

The other name involved was Binjimen Victor. Like Reed, he was not the most featured target on his team at Ohio State, but the 6’4 kid developed a reputation for making big catches in big spots. His ability to win 50/50 balls is an immediate draw and he’s also faster than he looks. Somebody with significant upside.

Both players are viewed as Day 3 prospects who will go somewhere in the 4th to 7th round range. The Bears are projected to have five picks around that time, so it will be a big opportunity to add another playmaker. Clearly they feel wide receiver is high on the list.
