REPORT: White Sox Interested In Veteran Free Agent Reliever

-

While the White Sox have mostly been in on some of the higher end free agents, focusing on starting pitching and a right fielder, they’re also looking to add to the bullpen.

With that in mind, Jon Morosi is reporting that the White Sox are among a group of teams showing interest in free agent reliever Craig Stammen.

The 35-year-old righty has pitched for the Padres the last three seasons and has pitched well, recording a 3.06 ERA in 209 appearances since the start of 2017. Last season, Stammen had a 3.29 ERA in 82 innings, striking out 73 and walking only 15.

Stammen has a career 3.63 ERA, spending the first seven years with the Nationals. He made a career high in appearances, coming in 76 times out of Padres bullpen and tied for the most holds with 31. However, Stammen gave up a bunch of leads too and blew nine saves, the most of any reliever.

The veteran isn’t a flame-thrower, as Stammen’s fastball averaged 92.6mph in 2019. He also throws a slider and curve ball, but since joining the Padres he’s thrown his fastball more than 62% of the time, as most relievers do. Although that was an increase from the last few years when he pitched for the Nationals, when he relied a tad bit more on the slider.
