Matt Nagy Doing “Everything” Behind the Scenes to Save Trubisky

-

A lot of head coach would’ve pulled the plug by this point if they saw how Mitch Trubisky was performing. They wouldn’t be blamed either. Just run down the list. Five TD passes in seven games. On track for less than 3,000 yards passing. A refusal to use his legs anymore and an ongoing inability to hit open receivers due to poor mechanics and bad reads of opposing defenses. Matt Nagy though is proving to be a bit more patient (stubborn?) than most head coaches.

In truth, the second-year coach has already proven he’s not ready to abandon the Trubisky ship just yet. After a horrific showing in Philadelphia that included 24 passing yards in the first half, Nagy did not budge from his original position. Trubisky is the starter and it shall remain that way. To be fair, his only other options are Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray so it’s not like he has another ideal option. Even so, it seems he isn’t willing to give up yet.

According to Adam Jahns of The Athletic, the coach is doing all he can to help his young quarterback dig out of this funk.

“So what the heck happened to Trubisky?

That’s what the Bears are trying to figure out. Nagy, according to people close to the team, is trying everything and anything to reverse his quarterback’s regression. Watching the broadcast film last week with Trubisky was part of that effort for Nagy. There is an intentional focus on Trubisky’s attitude and state of mind.”

Nobody can ever say Matt Nagy lacks commitment

Nagy is a guy who believes in positive thinking and family. So it makes sense that he wouldn’t be as quick as others to throw in the towel on Trubisky. He believes in second chances and is willing to see this thing through to the end if he must. Commendable, if nothing else. At the same time, what sort of message does this send to his locker room? It’s clear the kid is lost right now and Nagy’s obligation isn’t just to the quarterback. It is to winning football games. If the quarterback is the main issue, something must be done to fix it.

Nagy is playing a dangerous game by keeping a guy who is so ineffective under center. This Bears roster is filled with a lot of mature, team-oriented players but even they have their limits in regards to how much they can stomach. Trubisky remains steadfast in his hard work to get better, but it’s hard to see how he might get his confidence back unless he starts being the reason they win football games in the second half. His head coach is willing to take the hits from the media to give him that chance at least.
